Aboard Sun Princess, the vibe at The Piazza is all about Zumba classes, interactive gameshows, vocal performances and other high-energy events throughout the day. Princess developed its Piazza-style atrium concept back in 2006 and debuted it aboard Crown Princess. Flanked by glass elevators and quiet water features and bookended by The International Cafe and the wine-themed Vines, the Piazza has been a sort of oasis of calm on every Princess ship since.
A welcoming ambience and innovative offerings create the perfect way to see the world
The closet is deep enough to contain my large-size men's shirts and jackets on hangers without crushing them sideways, something that isn't always the case with built-in closets on newer ships. Princess is calling the arena the most technologically advanced entertainment venue at sea ever, though we're sure Virgin Voyages and Royal Caribbean (two lines known for some very high-tech shipboard theaters) would quibble with that. On Sun Princess, a trip down the vessel's main entertainment drag on Deck 7 in the evening takes you past one bustling nightspot after another, from an Irish pub with live music to a comedy club that doubles as a karaoke lounge. That said, Princess isn't trying to be a family line like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line. You won't find the truly over-the-top family attractions such as giant water parks, go-kart tracks and water coasters that those lines offer sprawled across Sun Princess' top decks.
... but its new suite zone is a miss

The Wake View Terrace Rocks a Miami Vibe

The much-awaited, 21-deck Sun Princess — the biggest and most venue-packed Princess ship ever — began its first sailing with paying passengers Wednesday after an 20-day delay. While we didn’t see everything on the ship – most notably, we couldn’t view the spa, the Park19 adventure area for families or the Wakeview Terrace at the back – we were impressed with the Princess Arena. This theater can be configured in different ways for different types of shows, and has 9 LED screens that will amplify the productions.

It'll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is due to debut in February 2024. Plus, the nightstands have little drawers and shelves that augment the room's storage. In addition, younger travelers will find major new tween and teen hangout zones (called Neon Grove and The Underground, respectively) within the ship, plus a large playroom for the littlest Princess cruisers called Firefly Park. Princess regulars know what they like, and what they like isn't necessarily giant, activity-packed vessels. But that might not matter if Sun Princess succeeds in drawing in a new wave of Princess fans.

There’s a special show bar for mixologists to do demonstrations and a lovely ceiling map of the world.

The standard rooms on Sun Princess aren't flashy, but they get the basics right — more than right. I miss my quieter atrium, and I suspect other Princess regulars will feel the same. That said, The Piazza as a bigger entertainment space might be just what Princess needs to draw in younger, more entertainment-driven customers, particularly the coveted "new to cruise" crowd that hasn't sailed with the line before. Rising three decks, the circular space features stadium-like seating around its second and third levels that gives it the feel of a theater in the round. It has a large LED screen at one end and a stage that can rise from the floor.
Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Discovery Princess. In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy. In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio will be greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly. On average, the line comes out with one new ship every two years or so, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them.
(It starts first in Europe, then moves to Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades). Expect more natural light throughout the ship; a lighter color palette in the cabins; more entertainment venues, with better technology; and a wider variety of dining venues. “We started with a blank piece of paper,” said Parker, who has the title Director of Newbuild Guest Experience & Product Development. He stressed that the ship is different from Carnival’s Excel-class – those vessels include Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, which will debut this month – even though they are a similar size; Sun Princess has 1,000 fewer passengers.
It's also the first Princess ship with a separate suite complex aimed at the growing number of big-ship-loving vacationers willing to pay big bucks to be extra pampered while at sea. A second ship in the new Sphere Class series, to be called Star Princess, is on order from the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, for delivery in 2025. Its first voyage is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2025, and will take place in the Mediterranean. The arrival of Sun Princess marks the first time Princess has launched a new class of ship in nearly 11 years.
"It also has some terraced viewing within the Piazza so you don't have to be on the rail anymore to see the entertainment and activities. You have much better sightlines both interior and exterior across the ship." It's worth noting, too, that the Medallion, the line's wearable technology that personalises your cruise experience, was built into Sun Princess at the start of the build, rather than being added on post-build. The Lotus Spa® on Sun Princess and Star Princess is our first spa to stand two stories tall! Just as exciting are the new features you can enjoy, like a salt room and an aeromatic steam room, and reimagined favorites, like the Enclave and hydro pool. Sun Princess can't wait to welcome her sister ship, Star Princess, to the fleet - the third ship with this celestial name. She'll feature the new Dome, out-of-this-world views in the Piazza, Signature Collection Suites and more.
